A Review of: Apple MacBook with Aluminum Case

Though I have not owned a lot of computers, I have owned enough to know the difference between a few popular brands of laptops. The Dell I owned crashed fairly quickly (and eventually was fried by a water spill, later resurrected by a friend with a lot more computer skill than me). A Compaq I owned had to go to the shop 3 times (two weeks each) for a broken fan, screen, and just as the warranty was expiring, a new motherboard. But, I have personally seen an Apple laptop last a good 9 years. So, I finally bought one.

I have to say that though it takes a little adjusting to the operating system (from pc), Apple’s work great. I can see why so many people are devoted to the company (and the ipod helps, too, I imagine). Really, this thing I’m writing on is just great. But for one thing.

I recently moved into an apartment building that offers free internet. This has helped save on internet and landline costs. But, the signal isn’t as strong as a personal line. My computer has a hard time finding and holding onto the internet signal, which is very frustrating when trying to watch The Daily Show on Hulu or a skate vid on Transworld’s site. One of the first days of this frustration I frantically searched the internet to see if there were some way I could better pick up the signal. And, yes, it was when my computer wasn’t picking up a good signal which in turn turned into a cursing fit. I do own movies I could watch on my computer, for crying out loud (the new Hulk, for one). But it’s the principle.

So, I finally found a chat site that mentioned that the aluminum Apples have notoriously bad reception because of the aluminum case. What, wait, what? Then why have it? Will it better protect me from a bullet? Can it be taken apart and makeshifted into a plane? Not that internet access (airport) is one of the most used functions on a computer or anything. So it goes. I have about a 5 hour blackout period where it’s nearly impossible to get online (probably too many people using). A good time to read a book. And, it looks like Man vs Wild on Netflix will just have to be a late night treat.

So, Apple with aluminum case, you are great, but have one flaw: you can dodge a bullet.

A Review of: Colgate 360

I have been using a Colgate 360 toothbrush for longer than I can remember. I think I bought it at Target while purchasing detergent and possibly pants or speakers. It is a plain white and orange design with blue oval grips. I think it is the grips that allow for some 360 tooth-brushing maneuver that I have been unable to discover.

At this point in the 306’s life, it has that toothbrush feel that no longer distinguishes it from any older or used toothbrush. And, it is forming what can only be described as a crown due to the flattening of the bristles from pressure applied by my hand on the grips against my teeth. So, a good run Colgate 360, but I think it’s time to find a new toothbrush.

A Review of: The University of Cincinnati Langsam Library

Lately I have been walking to most of my local destinations, but today I felt the press of time and so drove to the UC Langsam Library to check out Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It was a warm and humid day. I parked at the meters that line MLK Blvd, being Sunday and the meters free, instead of parking in the garage connected to the library, which charges $3 an hour. I jaunted up a grass hill, past the engineering building, and went through the revolving door of the heavily air-conditioned library.

There are two flights of stairs that lead to the section of the library that carries most of the literature selections. I had gotten my call number from home and familiarity with the library meant little time wasted before I was making my way through the isles. Like most anyone, I browse the shelves when I walk. The names that I recognized before finding Frankenstein were Sartre, Proust, Wordsworth, and Shelley. I love this part of the library visit, the names that pop out with memories attached to them—the young thrill of existentialism, the unread Swann’s Way, writing about The Prelude for my exams, and always being a little too ignorant of Romanticism.

The library has, as would be expected, several copies of Frankenstein. I leafed through several to find the size, font, and page color I like. A smaller book with browned pages and a nice round font seemed best, even with the copious underlining and marginalia. I normally like a clean text, but the other qualities of the book were perfect, and since I’m reading the book as part of a book club, I thought the marks would somehow add to the leisure of reading.

Satisfied with my selection I made my way to the self-checkout machine. I noted along the way the emptiness of the library, which is not unusual in the summer. It turned out the self-checkout machine was out of receipt paper, so I had to go to the main desk to check out the book. I waited a moment while an elderly man finished checking out, and then gave my book and card to the librarian (by his age, a student worker, most probably). I explained the paper issue in the self-checkout machine, but we had a slight miscommunication that was uncomfortable for a moment, but was quickly resolved. I think I may have been mumbling.

I left the library in good spirits. As I ran a little down the grassy hill, I decided to stop at the drug store across the street from my apartment and get a bag of Doritos to enjoy with my book. All in all, the UC Langsam Library is a great Sunday destination. I highly recommend it. And, if you have a few hours to kill, there are plenty of tables out in the open as well as study desks tucked in various corners of the library. There is also a special eating room with vending machines. And, the library is furnished with several computers, for those with more electronic appetites. Bon reading.

A long time ago I wrote to the Academy of American Poets and asked if they would please have an audio addition to the Bukowski poems already on their site (there are a number of his poems audio). I think I wasn’t nice and got an email back saying they would consider it and to please stop being so un-nice. I agree. One should be nice. But, I was speaking for a dead poet that did appear in Poetry (yes, I saw it for myself in the Portland Public Library downtown). So, there still isn’t an audio of him on the esteemed site. I don’t blame. I can see why one wouldn’t want to support … wait, he’s on the site. He was in Poetry. What, then, can we say about esteemed? Not that esteemed isn’t right, no, it is. And also input. I love that words bind, fill covers. To disappoint, to be enlivened, to feel living in covers in words, covered. Terrible the words all over the page … an mla format dished out as though: not a (thing of thing). But, the particular thing in words all over words (a neighborhood of words, a community) in covers. What do ears hear in words (the regular ears, not the ear) in the all over the page words. What corpse, words in covers, what a peeping to corpse under covers. Covers, they say, are nothing. Under covers, they say not much about. Some say in the covers … oh, actually, layer, or a cover in a cover, they like that … they are guilty as we. Undercover words, poor words, cover. Cover the page-cover (cover of cover) so, a layer of words cover themselves. A warm. A cold. Ah. An ah. Which one? Yes, which.

I wouldn’t normally do this, but on advice, I am posting a tid-bit from a workshop I’m taking. It’s a tid essay on voice, which I have ambivalent feelings talking about. Also, a description of a project I’m working on. Umm.

A Voice within a Voice within a Voice within a Voice …

I have resented the cleanliness and elegance of tight and perfect writing. I have felt that writing should be dirtier and more excessive. I still feel this way. Often. Not all the time. A person has the right to feel in many different ways.

I cannot start with a magical notion of voice, the voice of ________ speaking through me. Rather, I want to think of voice as an end product and how this end product comes to be. That is, if there is magic, it’s the magic of microchips, moveable joints, and communication of associative thoughts via these instruments.

When I think voice (or poetics) I think syntax and lexicon. That is to say, when I write and a construction or word happens I often try to think of a replacement. For example, “a banana handed” can become “that yellow fruit gun.” Some (i.e. truncated list) of the poets, to me, that inspire surprise: John Berryman, Karen Volkman, Harryette Mullen, Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore, Tenney Nathanson, William Carlos Williams (particularly “At the Faucet of June”) and others. They seem to offer a platter of interesting words in interesting situations. I, too, want to scramble words and see if they can come together in surprising and pleasant ways.

I find subject matter interesting when a strange lexicon is attached to it. I wrote a long poem about Antarctica because of the interesting language the early explorers used in their journals. Dry and optimistic, totally unreal to their situation. There is ice formation and equipment jargon as well. Though I do not restrict myself to subjects connected to a particular jargon, I find that most any subject produces a kind of jargon, and this results in the subject’s, and my own, voice. Love is a jargon of proclamations and silences. Lawn mowing a jargon of fits, grass spray, rock tings, and stained sneakers. If there is some magic in subject matter, it is the strange way we speak about things.

Overall I have noticed that my voice is objective. Not always, but most often. I like this objectivity because it gives me a chance to explore what would be my voice as well as other voices not mine; those outside my white, heterosexual male (whm) spectrum (to what extent that’s possible). I think this good, though my attempts at otherness probably fail more often than not because of my limited whm perspective.

I will describe my current project. It is composed in a Word document using words and space. The overall voice is composed of many smaller voices. That is, I started three different projects with different voices that had casual relations and which I want to bring together under one voice. The first sequence concentrates on emphasis (via Julia Carlson’s lecture last year) and repetition. To my ear these poems have very little voice, are very objective, very fragmented, have no pronouns, and at times are without much meaning to them at all. I enjoyed writing these very much. The next sequence I wrote moved away from emphasis and concentrated on imagistic renderings of light. I used pronouns in this series, but in universal ways so as to retain a somewhat objective voice. The images and use of pronouns, I think, give these poems some emotion. The third sequence came from a frustration of trying to get the first two sequences to talk each other. I tried and tried but they were resistant. So, I wrote a sequence that took a little from each of the previous sequences: a little emphasis, a little imagery, etc. As I wrote the last sequence I also began thinking of writing a thirty page poem. Why thirty pages I don’t know, it just seemed like a good number. I finally decided that the long poem was going to be a noir poem and this long noir poem would contain the three sequences. This came from a pedestrian interest in noir and recently watching Hollywoodland, not a bad movie. The noir voice is interesting to me and even comes with fun jargon. A jargon I’m going to have to do some more thinking about. So, what I am now attempting to write is a long voice that incorporates smaller voices to make one long and variant voice. I don’t know if all this is going to work together, but I’m having fun trying.

1. When I was in Cub Scouts (no, that’s not the oddity), 9 or 10 (?), a bunch of other Cub Scouts were playing a game on a patch of grass before a meeting. I asked what they were playing. “Smear-the-queer.” I had no idea what this meant, so the rules were explained to me (I mean, I had NO idea). One kid holds a ball (a football?) while everyone else chases him and tries to tackle this ball holder (eek) to the ground. (The more I write about this, the worse it gets.) So, of course I played. And you know what? I was great at not getting tackled, I was great at being queer and not getting smeared.

2. For a time (too long), I thought I was Bukowski. Not that I thought I was Bukowski, in fact, he was a bit like me. Then, one day, hung-over and walking to work, I wanted this smelly, 250 pound white alcoholic off my shoulders. But, it took a while.

3. I am a pretty bad speller. But, I’m trying.

4. I once cut my foot open in a water hole in Hawaii named The Queen’s Bath while standing on sharp as hell lava for a picture my grandmother was trying to take of me. We walked there (my cousin was with us, too), so it seemed I was screwed. But there were some construction dudes around, and one came down, make me chew some awful tasting leaves (eucalyptus maybe?), and apply them to my cut. They then drove us to my grandmother’s car. The Queen’s Bath, sadly, was covered in lava … or perhaps my unconscious mind made it so.

5. I saw porn for the first time when I was 5.

K and I were talking about blacklists tonight and wondering if they exist now. Not in the past sense, and not in the general now sense, but if it happens. Citizen Kain. Now, the not and now. Freedom of speech splatters possible all over and there is no … But, gossip is taboo in public circles. To do better is to be a to-do-betterer, and to not is not.

Make: school loans go away; poor neighborhoods be common-good neighborhoods; government be (as we are defined) congressional; be good gooders of poor conditions; be in a position to be gooders without feeling too good about it or too far from the done badders; be like “” good; generally define the particular slight in a general feeling of slightedness; be bad, occasionally, at a certain thing; and never bad enough.

What are the black listed slights? Arrested? Seen arrested? Distance the arrest but not. Arrest towards the possible good arrest. Or, are arrests possible?

Words usually bomb, and happen to terrorize, but sometimes destruct. Made in packages meant to be listened to for the fine ticker. Tick.

Cow by cow the city levels itself. Which side of the bubble do I (we) live in. Not difficult to say: the one just slightly down, or up, depending where the bubble gets it: observed. Cows at the corner store or buried.

Where does the level lay? All along the hills. Hill to hill (flat?) the armature of steel sits measuring. Measure, measure.

Not that the little wrappers and people don’t walk under, they do, and not to the river. They walk and watch the rust attach to the bottom of the measure. Appropriate to be measured so. So, appropriate. And no smell brings the neighborhood out, no lawn to BBQ.

There is the bridge to Kentucky routing. Here is the present, measuring the quality of gin. Cheap and held over for the measure of morning. What? We gaze up.

The particular head manages its space funkily. To off into that obscure morpheme and meandering medium of: universal time.

Labeled (accordingly street signs follow) as this poetry which, accordingly, manages the street signs, a magazine names itself: poetry. And to follow, some do and some do not want to inhabit it.

A tailored suit feels comfortable, but one must like the material. A suit of foil feels streety, gritty. A cloud suit, well, difficult.

So, to suit for poetry means that flighty into those places (ah, Keats) of: fear, eh, no.

Or relentlessness.

Placed between the real and what makes the real, the incubation period must fit rather suitily, but to what tailor can we drive, park, and walk into? Then out of. Often, it seems, in the next town. Or, right on the shelf. Or, a few moments before the real can snatch away from the making of the real. Really.

So, the suitors linger now and actually want pants and shirts and shoes before visits. Oh, sit so. Legs cocked.

Concretely, a desk. Kierkegaard liked everyone to think he ran around town, café to café, and fooled them. Though, it seems, not us. The porch with (usual) bushes. Makes a white then monarch butterfly through power lines. This street, street before, now covered in marks where repair makes cars functional. Victor street sounds so much like victory: ha, you street.

The catalogue of good poets gets pissed around like after a few beers. My Pope, my Homer.

And hope is secret for just getting a word in on how it ______ be. Name that secret the squirrel fleeing the only oak tree for all the street. St not quite an acronym but a place holder. The bushes facsimile dreadfully a smell.

Not days or hours anymore, but a month of this. Cut the morning and paste it above the evening and a day makes for reading those famous poets (not only for tests but also for pleasure). And the word poet and famous makes a lot of sense. They see trees, too. All the folks walking under them. Not that something useful can’t be made: paper!

Can city be city when infected by city proper so intravenously? The sudden butterfly moans a “make it concrete and you can.” And so. So, X all the abstracts and the butterfly is there again. Moaning again. Complaining again about its flight patterns and how these are not the flight patterns it thought they would be while in the cocoon. And that moaning.
